Ok, so if you have an Android/iPhone you’ve no doubt heard of Shazam or SoundHound: Apps that listen to a snippet of a song and then identifies the song. Brilliant technology which proves very helpful when you’re jamming to a song on the radio and don’t know what it is.
The same tech has been applied for usage on TV shows now. If it’s been broadcast on one of 130 US TV stations in the last 5 years, then it’s been indexed and using the shows unique soundprint, you’re able to let the app “listen” to it for a couple seconds and once it’s identified what you’re watching, you can broadcast it across all the normal social networks. InfoNow also has an Foursquare-esque stream of friends and what they’re currently watching. Nice touch.
Very clever idea. Kinda like Last.fm but for TV shows – something I’ve been wanting for a while now. If you’re already telling people where you are, what you’re listening to and what you’re doing, you might as well tell them what you’re watching too.
The app is free on iTunes but you’ll need an US account to download the app. Get it here.
@ChristopherM asked me this afternoon what I thought of this deal for an iPod Docking System and should he get one. Bottom line is I dont think iPod docks are a good buy and here’s why.
The biggest thing for me is that once you’ve plugged your iPhone into the dock, that’s it… You can’t use your phone for anything else. That’s a monstrous draw-back for me. I wanna play music, whilst reading feeds or playing on Twitter / Facebook etc. I don’t wanna be phone-less just so I can play music.
The setup I have is as follows:
Apple Airport Express
I have this little beauty plugged in to a 2-point powerplug behind my TV cabinet and my speakers are plugged into it.
I play music to my lounge from iTunes. iTunes connects to the Aiport Express which allows me to stream my music over my wireless network to the the speakers in my lounge.
The free ‘Remote’ app is installed on my iPhone. Basically it lets you control iTunes from your iPhone. So with this app, I can adjust volume, change the track, play a genius playlist… Anything basically.
So in summary, Remote controls iTunes which streams music to the Airport Express device that my speakers are plugged into in the lounge.
It’s wicked simple and in true Mac style, it just works. What setup you using?
