WordPress Plugin: Social Karma
The idea for this struck me the other night when reading an article on TechCrunch. You know how they mention brands like Twitter or Facebook and then at the bottom display a summary of those brands and some detail on them / what they are / do etc etc… Well that got me thinking about doing something along those lines, but for other bloggers/socialites.
Scenario
I’m writing a post and I want to mention Mark Bloomfield. I decide to link to his blog, his Twitter feed and Facebook page. So the only way I can think of doing this now, is something along the lines of
blah blah Mark Bloomfield (Twitter, Facebook, Blog) blah blah
… A bit tedious, especially when you factor in the time it takes to select the word, click the chain icon, paste in the link, repeat.
Enter my new WordPress plugin, Social Karma.
Let me show you the end result:
blah blah [social blog=http://imod.co.za twitter=yellowllama facebook=yellowllama]Mark Bloomfield[/social] blah blah
Winning huh? :) Yeah I thought so…
So all you do is write a shortcode like this:
(social blog=http://imod.co.za twitter=yellowllama facebook=yellowllama)Mark Bloomfield(/social)
** NOTE: Use square brackets, not normal brackets as used above.
I’ve catered for as many social networks as I could think of, and I hope that people will comment below and give me some ideas for more: I’ll be happy to add in some more. So far I’ve catered for:
- A blog URL
- Flickr
- Last.fm
- AboutMe
- Youtube
- Vimeo
- Delicious
- Digg
- Posterous
- Tumblr
- Dribbble
IMPORTANT: Only the blog URL item requires a full URL. Otherwise, you just enter the username for that service and its automatically placed into the URL for that service.
You can download the plugin from the WordPress repository
I’m very keen to hear your comments and I hope you find this as useful as I do.

Just bloody love this… Small thing.. but makes your post look more cleaner and beautiful.
Just a suggestion, please maybe in the future add support for Forrst :)
Awesome, thanks.. I’ll include Forrst in the next update.

Really great idea for better usability! Thanks for making this available to the community:)
One question…are the icons available in different sizes by any chance? Or can the icon size be specified globally (or with the shortcode)?
