iPhone 4 Cases – My thoughts

So my iPhone 4 is about 3 weeks old now. I’ve tried 2 different types of cases and I thought I’d share my opinions on the 2 differing types of iPhone 4 Cases as this feedback would’ve been helpful to me when I first got my iPhone.

The first one I got was on recommendation from @melattree and @mikesharman.

Capdase Soft Jacket 2 Expose

The one I got was black/clear so basically the edge was black and the back was clear. In terms of value for money, this was a great buy. I got it from Incredible Connection for about R150 and included in the package was the actual cover, a screen protector, an actual belt-mountable neoprene pouch and a stand (shown above).

What I liked about it

It felt the like the iPhone is solidly protected from just about anything. The entire phone was wrapped in the case and where the case stopped, the screen protector took over.

What I didn’t like about it

2 of the things that make the iPhone 4 extra sexy are its thinness and the aluminum strip running around the edge. The Capdase renders both of those features null and void. Whilst it gives super protection, it makes the iPhone feel very thick and bulky. And the aluminum strip is entirely covered by the case so that sucked a little.

Another thing that erked me was this: The case kinda bulged where the volume buttons are – almost like the case didn’t align correctly with the volume buttons. What this meant is that the edge of the case met with the edge of the screen protector (instead of overlapping it) and it kept lifting the screen protector and within a few days this area was a mess of dust & fluff caught underneath that lifted edge. Sucked…

Enter the contender:

Cygnett Slim Case

There’s a few different versions of this case. The one shown above is the “Frost” black version. (Note the slight opaqueness). But you can also get it in a range of colors (red, blue clear etc) and also in a solid black silicon version. You can get these cases from Macnificent.co.za

What I liked about it

It’s very slim, but it doesn’t feel like your iPhone is exposed. It’s not shown in the picture above so I took my own picture (right) – the case wraps the edges, but falls away at the top & bottom. This is awesome for me because it shows off the sexy aluminum bit, but still gives good protection to the iPhone. There’s cutouts for the volume buttons so there’s no messy bulging there. In the package was the case, a screen protector, an applicator and a little soft cloth to wipe your iPhone 4 with.

So far, there’s nothing I don’t like about this case. It’s super slim, it feels great and it doesn’t hide the things that make the iPhone 4 awesome. The opaque frosted version is also great if, like me, you have a decal for the back of your iPhone.

Conclusion

If you’re prone to dropping your iPhone 4, then I’d suggest you go with something more rugged like the Capdase unit. But if you’re an office worker / super careful with your phone, then the Cygnett is win.

Sidenote

Props go out to Macnificent’s service. When you order with them, you get an SMS with updates on your order – Order received, Payment received, Goods ready to ship, Goods shipped – and their after sales service is awesome. They accidentally sent me the silicon black case instead of the frosted opaque case and they’re doing a great job of resolving the issue for me. Get your Apple goods from Macnificent.co.za
